Custom made headboard...

...by yours truly and of course my helper Alex had to get in the act, too! :)

So I saw this on HGTV and every time I see something on there I say to myself, "I can do that...I should do that..." and now the opportunity has come up to really put some of what I've seen to the test because we are making a brand new bedroom for mom to come stay with us.

I decided rather than spend $200 on a headboard I would make my own using the instructions I found on the HGTV website. I spent $16 at Joanne's for the batting, the cotton backing and the fabric which is an upholstery fabric that I think is awesome and it was in the clearance bin for only $3 a yard!! I then went to Home Depot and picked up a pre-sanded piece of 2' by 4' birch in 1/2" thickness and a 1X4X8 pine board which I cut in half when I got home (to make 2 legs for the headboard to attach).

Our 'work area' in the backyard, here I am painting my headboard legs with a high gloss pure white paint, this took 2 coats but the legs look great!

Cutting the batting to fit, I was going to use some extra padding on the sides but decided against it and just followed the directions the way it was on the website. 6" larger than the board for the batting and the fabric and then off you go with the staple gun!!!

Alex had to try it out and it took a few tries but he finally got the hang of the gun and applying enough pressure to make the staple go through the batting and into the wood.

Finally, it's done and VOILA!!! Alex has a full size bed as well so we decided to put it behind his bed to 'try it out' and he thinks it looks awesome! What do you think?
I know there are a lot of friends and family who read my blog to keep up on what is going on with mom and I am grateful that you all are reading and praying for all of us, thank you for that..it means so much to me and I feel the love and the prayers are keeping me strong. Well...ok so it's not going to change the fact that every bone and muscle in my body is aching right now but that's just because I put in a hard day's work on the renovations.

Things are coming along really well, we have the carpeting and padding here and hope to have that in on tuesday night and I will take a picture of the room when that's all done. The room is almost all painted, just a little bit of the trim needs to be finished and it will be complete.

Mom continues to work hard at her therapy thanks to Nancy and her tenacity and determination that mom will be stronger and better each day. Mom's oncologist, Dr. Singh, used to work at Stonybrook and he will get us the name of a good oncologist here for mom which will make me feel better knowing that the doctor comes on the recommendation of someone that I know and trust already. We also found out today that one of mom's neurologists is also originally from Long Island and he gave Nancy some names of neurologists up here as well...something that we really need right now because one of our main concerns is keeping the seizures that mom has had under control.

Again, thank you to everyone for your prayers.

Lin-headboard looks great. I can't wait to see it in person, I'm sure it looks even better. Mom is doing ok. We colored this morning and Lisa came for a quick visit and brough a card and flowers. Thank you and Jim so much for working so very very hard on the room for mom. Luv you.
