Do you My Space or Facebook?

Activity #5 for my Web 2.0 assignments is to learn more about social networking websites like My Space and Facebook. I have never been on Facebook before and don't think it is something that would be for me, either. I noticed that the library has 100 fans and yet the library's My Space pages have very few 'friends' and I wonder why? I only used My Space for a few months back in 2006...I mainly created the page so that I could log into My Space to see if my son (who was deployed at the time) had been on his My Space page, it would give me reassurance that he was ok if we didn't get a phone call for 2-3 weeks at a time. I rarely go onto my page anymore. My husband uses My Space pretty extensively as a way to promote his band and his music. He does run an open 'mic' night once a week and uses his My Space page to notify the other bands/performers if he isn't doing it that week for one reason or another.

That's a great observation. Facebook has surpassed Myspace in popularity with a large portion of the population - especially college age kids and older. That's one of the reasons that the Facebook page has so many more fans.

I have both, but I much prefer Facebook. Easy way to keep in touch with family and old friends and such.

I am on both, only just recently getting onto Facebook - about 2 weeks ago actually. I prefer Facebook. As I started writing I realized I was writing a novella about all the reasons I like Facebook more. Briefly, (stop laughing Linda) accessibility to information is all on the front page, I can see immediately how many new private messages I have, and when I go into them all the back and forth messages are grouped together. The News Feed and Status Update tabs act similar to forum threads, allowing back-and-forth communication that stays grouped together. I can see from one tab all my friends who are logged in, and can chat from that tab. And the chat box stays on top even if I move to other screens in Facebook.

I was never able to find everything or thoroughly understand the best way to use what I did find on MySpace. Facebook provides what I was looking for, a means to communicate, in a way that allowd me to get up to speed quickly.

Linda, you can laugh now :D

Linda, I also wanted to say, I think the way your husband uses MySpace fits the way it was designed, it's a great place to showcase music and videos, etc. I don't think Facebook would work very well. The way Facebook function all new stuff gradually rolls 'off' the page - even on your home screen. It's still there, just not on the front. MySpace allows you to lock what you want to promote on the home page, until you choose to change it.

They are actually very different systems, although both part of the social networking world.

I hope this all makes sense LOL

I had a Myspace first. Then got a facebook page. Now I only have facebook. It just seems more grown up to me. More streamlined...
