Official kick off to summer

And for me that means the beginning of the summer reading clubs at my library (that also happens to be where I work---how lucky am I? Seriously I have the best job in the whole world!!). I have always shared my love of books and reading with my children and I know for a fact that it has helped them to learn and grow as they experience the written word.

There are so many quotes that I love about reading but one of my favorites comes from a great book by Dr. Seuss.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."

Today Alex and I both signed up for our reading programs and he has already completed a book and I am not far behind. This year Alex graduated to the teen department since he will be entering 7th grade in the fall! While I am sad that my baby is growing up so fast I am also thrilled for all of the wonderful things in store for him as he continues his education over the next few years.

Here is my friend, Nathina, explaining the program to Alex and telling him how he can earn prizes as he reads his books this summer.

After we signed up there was pizza and games to be played and of course some computer time, what else is a kid supposed to do on a day of fun?

The children's department had characters from books roaming the library and it looks like "Wild Thing" decided to say hello to Alex while he was on the computer. I'm not quite sure if he knew what to make of that visit!

Do you have plans to read this summer? Do you share the love of reading with your children? No matter how young or old, there is nothing quite like escaping into the pages of a great novel while relaxing on the beach or out in your backyard on a sunny day...don't let the summer slip away without enjoying a good book.
